#1 Shun Fa Bak Kut Teh Eco Botanic

Specialties: Bak Kut Teh, Braised Pig Trotters, Sesame Oil Chicken

Shun Fa in particular is a Johor homegrown restaurant that the locals love and it’s pretty affordable considering the amount of meat you get. If you’re looking for something soupy to warm you up after getting soaked in the water park of Legoland Malaysia – this is definitely a strong contender.

Bak Kut Teh, their signature dish with assorted pork parts, fuh cuk, finished with green onions

Just in case you’re new to “bak kut teh” – it literally translates to “meat bone tea”. It’s a delicious herbal soup cooked with pork bones and Chinese herbs for a deeply rich, savoury, clear stock dish typically served with various parts like pork ribs, lean pork and some pork spare parts like liver and intestine, served in a claypot. Don’t worry, you can request for it to be served without spare parts!

One of the popular dishes we see on almost every table is the braised pig trotters too, which is a dark soy sauce-based sauce with vinegar which has a nice sweet and salty taste with a slight tang to it. Quite a treat for the taste buds and the gelatinous texture of the braising liquid has a nice mouth feel.

Black pepper crab can look intimidating like squid ink pasta, but it’s soooo good!

It’s also quite an affordable option if you love seafood – roughly RM250 – RM300 (SGD73 – SGD87) for 4 pax assuming you get two seafood dishes, fish and a vegetable dish with rice. Go ahead and eat crab with peace of mind. Definitely our pick if you are a seafood lover!

From left to right: Roasted chicken, siew yoke, and char siew are the popular 3 items for Malaysian chicken rice

Roasted or steamed chicken is a great option for young kids, but if you want a burst of flavour then you must try the siew yoke which is savoury pork belly seasoned Chinese five spice with crispy crackling, or the char siew which is a glazed barbecue pork which is sweet and a little sticky.

If you want something truly different from the norm, then try the curry version. Recommended for lunch or if you’re in a hurry to get back to Legoland Malaysia.

Restoran Tian Lai proudly displaying crab on their signboard – they walk their talk!

#5 Restoran Tian Lai

Specialties: Chilli Crab, Salted Egg Crab, Curry Pork Ribs, Sambal Sotong

This restaurant is another close favourite when it comes to seafood, and you know they’re proud of their crab just from the big crab they have on their signboard.

They back up their talk though because the crab here is fresh and good enough to just eat steamed with no sauce or seasoning. The natural sweetness of the crab comes through just like that. But if you’re here, you have to try their salted egg crab and their chilli crab if you have a good number of people eating with you.

Their salted egg crab is one of the best with that slightly wet yet crunchy salted egg sauce

Bit of a controversial take – their chilli crab is as good if not better than Singapore’s chilli crab. That’s what the hundreds of reviews they get say about their crab, you be the judge if that’s true or not. They also have great non-seafood dishes like curry pork ribs and sambal sotong which are deeply flavourful and perfect with a warm plate of white rice.
